Become a Tern Scout
We will be hosting a "Least Tern Nest Scout" training to help volunteers learn to locate and identify Least Tern nests and breeding activity. If you sign up to become a nest scout, we will assign you a section of beach to regularly walk and report findings to Audubon staff! This will help us more quickly locate colony areas and install protective measures!
When: Thursday, May 25th at 5:30 pm
Meeting Place: Pass Christian Harbor Parking lot (colony is to the east of the harbor)
Please RSVP to Molly Folkerts (mfolkerts@audubon.org).

Volunteer to scout or stand watch

We will be holding our 3rd Annual Volunteer Recruitment Luncheon on June 3rd from 12pm - 3pm at the Long Beach Yacht Club. We'll be posting more info here soon!
Audubon’s Least Tern volunteers are trained to politely engage and educate people who are about to absently walk into a nesting area.
“Most people coming to this part of the beach don’t know that it’s a nesting ground,” one veteran volunteer says. “Even if there are roped off areas and signs posted, they’re having fun and not paying attention. Lots of times they just walk right past the warnings.
“That’s why volunteers are posted on either side of the nesting grounds. Once people understand, they don’t mind a little detour at all.”

Donate for Awareness Signage

For donations of $25 to $50, your business name or logo can be printed on an Awareness Sign.
These signs will be placed around the perimeter of the Hancock County Least Tern colony in mid-May and remain in place while the terns are nesting (usually they leave in mid-July to mid-August).
They will be printed on aluminum or a special heavy-duty plastic sign board and mounted on a 2" X 4" wooden post (mounting and wood post supplied courtesy of Audubon Mississippi).
Your business will also be featured on the Audubon Mississippi Facebook page and on this website as a Hancock Tern Champion!
Click here for complete details and a form where you can quickly sign up online!
Individuals can sponsor a sign too! Just indicate that on our easy form. No money is due at sign-up - someone will contact you.

Share the Joy!

The landscape of the Mississippi Gulf Coast hosts a rich diversity of wildlife. Most residents see themselves as stewards of this lush coastline.
Many volunteer year-around to nurture these natural resources - protecting the wildlife that we have, and fostering the comeback of endangered species like the least tern.
On this part of the coast, we call it Hancock County Pride.
Check out our gallery page for photos of the terns by talented Gulf Coast residents, and some videos of Least Terns captured from elsewhere in the country.
Hilarious: The one-day old chick in the video below keeps dropping its meal, finally managing to get it down and then retreating for a nap.
